Watersheds are among the most basic units
of natural organization in landscapes. Consequently, processes
or activities occurring in one portion of the watershed will
directly impact downstream areas (land or water). Given the
essential role of water, the management practices will, in one
form or another, affect every organism living in the watershed.
This hands-on, science-based course will explore watershed
concepts and the interdisciplinary nature of environmental
issues.
Key topics will include: human impact on
the watershed; water movement in the forest; applied stream
ecology; water quality monitoring; groundwater; watershed
strategies; global water issues;
Proctor & Gamble water and industry tour; case study –
Glenburn Pond; lake ecology; wetlands; and teaching tools and
strategies.
